Medical/Applied Anthropologist

Jeanette Hassin

Jeanette is a medical/applied anthropologist with over 25 years of experience working with Indigenous communities in the areas of physical, behavioral, and mental health, health policy, and education. Her research, evaluation, and communication work with tribes and tribal organizations, both reservation and urban based, spans the United States.

This community based participatory work includes designing and implementing multiple research and evaluation projects for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Indian Health Service that address Indigenous health issues. Results were then translated into practical technical assistance and viable social messaging. For example, around social messaging, provided the research base for a campaign to enroll eligible young Indigenous adults into Medicaid and in long term care oversaw and conducted the primary and secondary research and then designed, in consultation with tribal leaders, an online road map for communities to use to provide the health care services that best fit their respective needs. In addition, she worked with communities along the southern border – New Mexico, Arizona, and California – providing program development and evaluation support in areas of behavioral health and social justice issues. She has presented her findings to community, governmental, and professional audiences, published in peer reviewed journals and reports, and produced multiple videos. Jeanette received her masters and doctorate degrees in anthropology at the University of Arizona.
