Carlos Algara is a Kendall Fellow, Science of Fair Representation, with the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists. In his role, Dr. Algara works to advance state and local policy and advocacy efforts around proportional representation.
Dr. Algara is the Mary Toepelt Nicolai & George S. Blair assistant professor of politics and government at Claremont Graduate University. His scholarship focuses on how citizens evaluate the representation they receive from institutions, candidates, and political parties, how these evaluations influence the institutional behavior of those elites, and, increasingly, what the implications of these representational linkages are for voting rights and democratic representation in a pluralistic democracy. He has served as an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow, working on democracy and procedural reform in the office of US Senator Jeff Merkley.
Dr. Algara's work has been published in Electoral Studies, Legislative Studies Quarterly, PLoS One, and Political Behavior. He earned a BA in political science from Washington State University, a master's in public policy from Oregon State University, and a PhD in political science from the University of California, Davis.
