Stacy Woods is the research director for the Food & Environment program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. She leads a team of scientists and analysts investigating the environmental, economic, and social impacts of industrial agriculture in the United States.

A geostatistician by training, Dr. Woods applies spatial data science to environmental health research, law, and policy. Her current work examines how the nation’s highly consolidated agricultural system impacts wetlands and other waterways, and how changes to the Clean Water Act have increased the vulnerability of these waters to agricultural pollution.

Dr. Woods brings decades of experience applying data science to environmental justice and water issues. She has served as an expert witness and science advisor in high-profile litigation cases, including the landmark Flint water case (Concerned Pastors for Social Action v. Khouri). Her work and commentary have been featured in media outlets including PBS News, ABC News, CBS News Radio, Reuters, public radio, Grist, E&E News, Investigate Midwest, Civil Eats, the Des Moines Register, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and the Chicago Tribune.

Before joining UCS, Dr. Woods worked for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory, and was a Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). She holds a PhD in environmental health engineering and an MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she was a Brown Scholar in community health.
